BLOG ENTRY#1 : Food is not only culture but also diplomacy: Leah Selim at
TEDx Gowanus

Leah Selim's TEDxGowanus speech underscores one crucial aspect of cuisine: its ability to promote cultural discovery and harmony. When traveling, humans usually take food at the core of their cultural experience. In addition, through linking food and culture, migrants are able to reestablish their roots on the basis of what they eat even in a foreign land. As noted by Leah Sellim, this influence of food is critical in helping people understand one another as well as in the preservation of culture.

Apart from building both diplomatic and personal relationships, food can rebuild this world that will be intertwined, culturally ric,h and tolerant. Beyond mere food consumption, it embodies our collective human experience. As a matter of fact, gastro-diplomacy/culinary culture exchange encompasses how food and cuisine could serve to mend rift between nations. Besides forging international relations, it also showcases its gastronomic history. In this manner, through food and culinary traditions, connections are forged and understanding of different cultures occurs leading to cultural diplomacy. Mouth-Watering Culinary Diplomacy. as stated by (Podzigun, 2023). This sophisticated melding of taste and tradition offers an opportunity for nations to engage in diplomatic conversations and break down cultural barriers through culinary events like international food days and food festivals. These events also provide an avenue for showcasing unique cuisines from different countries.

I was impressed by Leah Selim's TEDx Gowanus speech that addressed the cultural issues associated with what we eat, especially in terms of diplomatic interactions. He is indeed right at this point because it serves as a mirror to culture and an instrument to bring countries together for mutual benefits. Her remark was directly addressed at me - Cuisine is a language that connects the world, despite the different flavors and variations across our diversity.
